Corral Fire, November 24, 2007 @ 11:30 AM

Lots of info from the Malibu Times:
11 a.m. update
Saturday, November 24, 2007
Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman said a just-completed press conference at least 2,200 acres have burned and 35 homes (15 on Seabreeze Road, 15 in Malibu Bowl area and 5 in Latigo Canyon) have been destroyed, possibly one commercial structure. Firefighters [...]

I’ve put together another Google Map on fire status. At this point, it should be taken with a whole shaker of salt. I’m using the City Of Malibu sources, but note that the mandatory evacuations area is larger than the road closures, which doesn’t make sense.

Corral Fire, November 24, 2007 @ 10:00 AM

HereInMalibu has great photos and news from the fire again. I think she needs to move:
Here’s the rest of her photos from Flickr. As always, HereInMalibu has good fire information too:
If you’re listening to fire reports on local AM radio, take their geography with a (big) grain of salt. They’ve got the fire all [...]

Corral Fire, November 24, 2007 @ 9:30 AM

New reports of a fire near Kanan Dune Rd. in Malibu. For my family and friends, this is nowhere near me. Farther than the last fire.
I’ll be updating on this site as I get information. Probably not as frequent updates as last time. My Internet is out at home (unrelated to the fire) and I’m [...]

Google FTW: Fixing Arrow Problems in OS X Python

I lived with it for ages. I tried to fix it on my own, by selecting different emulation types. Finally I Googled for it. And pretty much instantly found the answer:
python `python -c “import pimp; print pimp.__file__”` -i readline
Moral? If at first you don’t succeed, Google. If Google fails, try, try again.
Update: And to [...]

Rands Writes The Nerd Dating Handbook

Umm. I don’t recognize myself in there at all. No, not at all. Umm, I think the phone’s ringing.

Canada.com Infected With Trojan-Installation Browser Hijack

Summary: Visitors to Canada.com (not hyperlinked for obvious reasons) will have their browsers hijacked, and a series of prompts will download and attempt to install malicious software. This will happen ONLY on the first visit from an IP address. Subsequent visits to Canada.com will not experience the browser hijack.
NOTE: I have only experienced this on [...]

Correction to Ubuntu Geek’s “How To Check Your External IP Address From The Command Line”

I follow the Ubuntu Geek blog, and have found some very useful tips there. However, there’s a problem with their latest tip, “Howto Check you (sic) external IP Address from the command line.”
Some background: There’s a very useful website located at whatismyip.com, which reports the IP you used to connect to the site. If you’re [...]

A Weak Defense: Breakins at CIHost.com

Here’s a reason to think twice about your colocation provider: CIHost.com has been broken into four times over the past two years, and had servers and equipment stolen. Their Chief Corporate Counsel, James Eckels, says the robbers “Knew what they’re doing,” and that their facility is “in a bad part of town.”
There’s very little payoff [...]
