He seemed to take it to heart. I don’t have permission to post his e-mails, but both his original question and his response to my answer seemed sincere and thoughtful (and quite funny in places).

As to Rands — yeah, he rocks. Even though I try to be a monotasker. I highly recommend his book, “Managing Humans” for anyone who, you know, does that.

I put on some weight over the holidays — got up to 230 pounds. (Yoyo is bad. Bad Schof.) Just lost that 20 pounds from January 1 to February 1, and I’m back to 211. Aiming for another 20 in February. (Though I’m not sure if that’s really practical.)

Sorry to hear about the water damage… I was wondering how the rains were treating you, but that’s pretty trippy. Hope you’re covered with some sort of insurance or didn’t suffer much loss. (We just got through with dealing with some flooding of our own, but that was due to the upstairs neighbors doing some illegal plumbing, DeNiro-in-Brazil style.)

Our sole adventure with the rains so far was my wife’s car hitting a huge rock in Malibu Canyon and getting a flat… got towed out within about an hour but that’s not a fun place to be at 9:30PM with rain and bad visibility.

But, yeah, beats the fires.

Wow, Brett. That sounds WAY worse than my situation. I’m just wet and dirty, your sand cliff sounds a little scary. Still, you’re right. At least we don’t have to worry about fires for a bit.

Wow, good luck with that.

My hippie shack is built between an unstable sand hillside above and a unstable sand cliff below. When I came home this morning the hillside above came down on top of it, it’s not buried but looks like it could be if things get wetter.

All in all it’s a nice change from worrying about fires…

Thanks to everyone who wrote in or commented with their thanks! It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed doing it — and it was a hell of a lot better than just sitting back and watching things burn on TV.

I am a little concerned about some of the fires in the back country, they may not threaten Malibu anymore but could still be an issue for Topanga and others… Anyway, hopefully this IS over and we can get back to our regularly scheduled crisis…

Just made a run to the store for drinking water and spoke with police officers at the barricade, they were not aware of any new fire near Big Rock.

The area looked great, little smoke, no visible fire although numerous emergency vehicles were racing about with sirens.

Also as I was coming back I found a downed line at the intersection of Topanga and Hillside, called Fire dept and they arrived to secure the area. The tree was entangled in the lines and was breaking them off as it blew.

The fireman also said that they knew of no new Big Rock area fire as well.

As for the mystery fire ??? Personally, I think it’s better to err on the side of caution, I would rather assume there is fire there and be prepared than “assume” everything is OK and get side swiped…

The Malibu city site map is unclear and vague at best.

The new region on PCH between TCB and Las Flores isn’t necessarily a fire. T-Cep knows nothing about it (I just called them).

Looking at the Malibu City map original that it was taken from, that region is a different shade of pink than the fire region. That may simply be marking the Big Rock Mesa neighborhood (I’m not sure exactly where it is but it is around there). Probably it would be good to get some independent confirmation before announcing it as a fire on other maps.
